Saturday 21th January, 2023 – Workshop Special programme – HQ Online Seminar Led by HQ Master Instructor Mr. Tetsunori Kawana Theme: Relief Work or Freestyle It was our great pleasure to have Mr. Tetsunori Kawana for our London online seminar. Kawana Sensei is a master teacher from the Sogetsu School in Japan and is an internationally renowned and recognised artist. Kawana Sensei has had exhibits in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. Kawana Sensei’s demonstrations were amazing and motivating. He inspired us to not only strive to show a beautiful arrangement but to open up different possibilities, using angles and individual creativity. All participants were rewarded from Kawana Sensei’s precious feedback. See more pictures on our Facebook 15th Anniversary Exhibition Sogetsu London Branch were super excited to welcome back our first in person exhibition after two years apart – our 15th anniversary, coinciding with HRH Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee and Akane Teshigahara’s 20th year as lemoto of Sogetsu Foundation. The response was extremely good and a great chance to reunite existing members and welcome new ones. Participants expressed their interpretation of the theme ‘Platinum’ with individual diversity in style, materials and skill. The exhibition proved to be an inspiring and invaluable experience. The AGM and Special lecture by Mr Yasuhiro Yamaguchi – “Chado, the way of Tea” Mr Yamaguchi is a long-term Sogetsu practitioner, initially trained with Suga- He has a wide range of interest in Japanese arts, including ikebana, calligraphy, —- Yamaguchi san beautifully explained the philosophy of Chado, and the way of Chabana (flowers for Tea ceremonies) by sharing the history of tea in Japan from the 8th century to the present day, and how Chado was established as an art form through time. I felt as if Yamaguchi san took us attendees on a journey through time from Medieval Japan, through the Samurai period, and finally to the present day and a quiet hasitsu (Tea house) for Chaji (Tea ceremony) in Kyoto. It was an inspiring lecture that I was privileged to attend as a new member of SSILB on 26th March. (TJ) We welcome you to visit Japan House London to experience – Windows on Tea: Live Chadō Demonstrations by Tankokai UK (japanhouselondon.uk) Theme: Happy New Year arrangements with colourful paper. Martine studied ikebana under Mrs. Lucille Evans in Hong Kong, and took part in various exhibitions and conferences in the Far East. In 1999, she started teaching ikebana while in Japan. On her return to the UK, she studied under the guidance of both the late Mrs Barbara Joyce and Mr Shigeo Suga. The theme and their demonstrations were as much interesting and unusual as previous ones. Mrs Koizumi-Hanson made her demonstration with only dried materials that came mostly from her garden. Her first composition with low height materials in a high container was well balanced and beautiful. For her second work she used dried sunflowers from her garden. The sunflowers were very delicate and fragile and it is difficult to fix due to their heavy heads. However, she used special fixtures inside the container and made a wonderful composition. Mr Garvin also demonstrated two compositions but with a bit of fresh flowers. As he comes from Jamaica, he said that using tropical flowers is very natural for him. He used them effectively to give a touch of colours to his works. His second and our last demonstration was very large using two vases and many dried branches. It was totally he. The workshop was smooth and nice. We had new faces from a visitor from another country to first-time beginners. They all enjoyed the workshop at London Branch. She is very experienced and was awarded the Komon degree. Mrs Carton has a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of Ikebana in Sogetsu. She has a passion for making flowers attractive using the techniques of Sogetsu; soegi-dome, jikadome, jumonji dome etc. She loves using the flowers or branches you can always see in the garden or neighbourhood, not always us special expensive materials. Our theme for the workshop in the morning is “Fruiting plant material” and “Only one kind of material” in the afternoon. She used crab apples and pyracanthas, with a vase which is an ordinary brown pottery colour but is blue inside. The top of the vase is horizontal but curved round. She told us that the combination of the colours was beautiful; red and blue. She also wore an apron which had blue and red patterns because she likes the colours. We learnt that it is important to think of lines, colour and mass when we create arrangements. Contrasts between the colour of the materials and the shape are important. Her work was strong and vivid. For the second arrangement for this theme, she used holly with pretty red berries and pine with small pinecones. She showed us how to use unique shapes of branches with red berries effectively. Another theme was “only one kind of material”. Mrs Carton used camellia which had a lot of buds but all of them closed up. She showed beautiful branch lines and added fresh leaves to make it attractive. For the second arrangement for this theme, she used hazel. She told us that simple materials are interesting. You may need some techniques such as massed expression to make a beautiful contrast with materials. Using wire is helpful. After each demonstration we got to do our own work and made our own arrangements based on these themes. All the attendees’ arrangements were magnificent, and her advice, such as removing branches or changing a shape made them more attractive. How magical! We just have to thank Mrs Carton so much for the lovely workshops. The arrangements were all stunning and fantastic and visually inspiring to look at. Their artistry caught everyone’s attention. The points she gave us the exact effect we wanted. The article – by Mrs Akiko Hartell This exhibition was approved as an official event for the Japan-UK Season of Culture 2019-2020. The event was opened by Mrs Tsuruoka who was accompanied by her daughter Miss Tsuruoka. Both were very generous with positive comments for the work they saw on display. All the visitors to the exhibition were greeted by a large installation made by Mrs Ikuyo Morrison, the idea of curator Wagner Kreusch, whose expertise in design was seen in the overall format. The ground floor and basement floor had several Ikebana exhibiting various styles and techniques used within Sogetsu. Many visitors, some of whom travelled from areas distant to London gave expressions of wow from being amazed by the level of skill and creativity they encountered. The theme YOU IN IKEBANA was apt in so much, that exhibitors were freely able to express themselves in their arrangements. All exhibitors were justifiably pleased to have the kind hospitality of the London Flower School as our host. Following my request, the exhibition was approved as an official event of the Japan-UK Season of Culture 2019-2020 and received publicity from the Embassy of Japan in London amongst other Japanese social media and floral arts interest groups. This is an important step to make big arrangements, for example an exhibition or a display for a special occasion. I am sure this workshop will guide us towards new and good experiences for our own next steps in our future flower arrangements. #### I would like to thank Ikuyo-sensei in providing us with those branches and bringing them to LFS in advance all the way from Bedford. She ended up bringing them on Tuesday and had to go home in a snow!! She even carefully brought her own composition from home for her demonstration, as she usually does. Her compositions of those branches were most beautifully arranged with a nice finishing touch of lovely flowers from her own garden. Ikuyo-sensei’s work inspires us to realise this is Sogetsu Ikebana and makes us want to challenge more. #### The article – by Mrs Yuko Cowin Saturday, 26th November 2018 Saturday, 8th September 2018 Friday, 1st June 2018 Saturday 4th 27th January 2018 Saturday 4th November 2017 Saturday 9th September 2017 Saturday 19th November, 2016 Saturday 10th September, 2016 Friday – Saturday, 3rd– 4th June, 2016 Friday, 29th May, 2015 Saturday, 18th October, 2014 Saturday, 24th January, 2015 Friday-Saturday, 27th-28th March, 2015 Thursday, 29th August, 2013 Saturday, 19th October, 2013 Saturday, 11th January, 2014 Saturday, 8th March, 2014 Saturday, 24th May, 2014 Friday-Saturday, 22nd-23rd February, 2013 Saturday, 13th April, 2013 Friday-Saturday, 21st-22nd October, 2011 Saturday, 21st January, 2012 Saturday, 10th March, 2012 Saturday, 12th May, 2012 Saturday, 23rd October, 2010 Saturday, 11th December, 2010 Saturday, 26th February, 2011 Saturday, 30th April, 2011 Saturday, 24th October, 2010 Saturday, 12th December, 2010 Friday-Saturday, 19-20th February, 2010 Saturday, 17th April, 2010 Wednesday, 2nd July, 2008 Thursday, 3rd July, 2008 Saturday, 27th September, 2008 Saturday, 13th December, 2008 Friday-Saturday, 20th -21st February, 2009 Saturday, 2nd May, 2009Saturday 23rd March, 2024 – AGM & Members’ Day

Sogetsu participants in collaboration demonstrated their creativity using the vessels provided by London Potters participants, and those who were not in collaboration equally created beautiful arrangements with their own containers. The exhibition was well received with the high number of visitors coming into the venue from opening to closing. The visitors seemed to be enjoying strolling among the compositions as well as the trial lessons.
Sunday 25th June, 2023 – Workshop led by Mrs. Ikuyo Morrison
Theme of Workshop:
Flower work using Driftwood and Dried wood
It was a beautiful sunny day, we had a great workshop led by Ikuyo-sensei at her residence. Her garden had a lot of flowers everywhere and well tended plants.
Ikuyo-sensei’s demonstration was a very interesting session and she used a lot of materials including from her lovely garden.
After her demonstration, we grouped in to teams and tried making arrangements with Driftwood and Dried wood kindly provided by Ikuyo-sensei.
The group workshop was very helpful to deepen our mutual understanding of each other.
We appreciated the fantastic workshop in a perfect environment.
Thank you very much, Ikuyo-sensei.

Virtual Exhibition: The responses to this year’s virtual exhibition was extremely good. Current and past members were invited to submit images of their arrangements based on the three themes: Glass container, Variety or material and Freestyle. We hoped participants would feel free to explore their creativity in the wide range of subjects suggested. It was important that everyone felt welcome to participate and so we encouraged both teachers and students of all levels to get involved.
The interpretation of the themes express individual diversity in style, choice of material and skill. We are fortunate as a branch to have such an eclectic group of ikebana enthusiasts who are not afraid to express themselves through the use of Japanese Floral Art in the school of Sogetsu. I hope you will enjoy these beautiful arrangements and that they may inspire you in your own work and daily life.

Virtual demonstration by HQ Master Instructor Ms Koka Fukushima. Theme: Using the Japanese Bamboo Baskets.
Koka-sensei has such a beautiful collection of bamboo baskets. It was intriguing seeing the material she used for each and the stories that made her connect them. It was a very interesting session with a lot of useful information to apply when arranging in bamboo (and perhaps other) baskets. I am personally curious about the material we do not often see in the UK. Such things challenges us to think of what are suitable alternatives. This lends the new creation to the spirit of exploration of new ideas.
