I attended Ilse Beunen’s demonstration and workshop on the last day of my stay in London — although attending the event was not the main purpose of my visit to London, it did become an unforgettable experience for me. I have seen many of Ilse’s ikebana works on Instagram and know she is a well-known ikebana teacher in Europe, so I decided to join the event soon after I realized that I was able to do so.

I was impressed by Ilse’s demonstration and how she handled the lines of the materials — these works did remind me of the importance of the use of lines and the creation of spaces. For me, this is one of the most essential techniques in ikebana. As for the workshop, we were required to use glass vases to create ikebana works — this is one of the themes in Sogetsu that I find a little bit tricky. Through this workshop, which allowed me to observe a variety of possibilities starting from the same idea, as well as through Ilse’s comments on each work, I felt I became more comfortable with this kind of arrangement.

While I was greatly inspired by this experience, I also cherished this chance of getting together with Sogetsu members in London, including old acquaintances and new friends — connecting people through flowers is always such a wonderful thing. Finally, I have to thank Ikuyo sensei, who invited me to join this event, helped me prepare the necessary materials, and made this part of my precious memory in London.
