10 YEARS OF SOGETSU LONDON BRANCH

The Sogetsu School of Ikebana London Branch was founded in December 2007 by Ikuyo Morrison, at the suggestion of Sogetsu headquarters, Tokyo. As the launch of the New Global Training Textbook session for the entire UK was to be in London in 2008, the establishment of a local branch there was crucial.
Our initial task was to recruit members and to hold the New Textbook Global training session about six months later. In April 2008, we were approved as an official branch by Headquarters, and the inaugural meeting was held with 47 members. Mr Shigeo Suga was invited to be honorary advisor to the branch. A few months later, we welcomed Master Instructor, Ms Koka Fukushima, to the New Textbook session with around 60 participants. The result exceeded our expectations.
Ten years have passed since then. The second director, Martine Gracey, took over from Ikuyo Morrison. She was succeeded by Keiko Takahashi. Since April 2017, Shoko Koizumi Hanson has been the director. All the other committee members have worked hard for the past 10 years.
Several long-service members deserve a special mention. The first, Nasreen Greenway, has been working on the committee for 9 years. Founder members, Martine Gracey and Myriam Boyden, served for 7 years, and Keiko Takahashi (Huby) for 5 years. Irene Moore and Fumiko Nakasato have been committee members for 7 years.
As mentioned above, we would not be celebrating our tenth anniversary without their contribution. I would also like to thank all our members for their much-appreciated support. We currently have 41 members. I am filled with deep emotion when I reflect upon the 10 years that have passed since the establishment of our Sogetsu London Branch. (The article – by Ikuyo Morrison)
