The theme of the January workshop was very exciting: “Using both fresh and unconventional materials”. It is a pleasure to learn from instructors that we can find materials which can be used for Ikebana while we are walking about the town. This time our instructors, Hiromi and Irene, were no exception.
Hiromi used scraps of silver paper, balloons and foil with a bunch of carnations arranged as a mass. She used pink Midollino sticks for another arrangement with lots of small Anthurium, and the stems of ivy plants. Midollino sticks can be bent into any shape.
Irene showed some gorgeous arrangements, one of which used Salix gracilistyla (Pussy Willow), which were tied with shiny red ribbon and gorgeous pine tree twigs and Leucadendron jester were added to them. Ruth gave Irene clear plastic sticks which made a geometrical pattern, and her last demonstration was an effective conclusion, leaving the participants in the workshop with the impression that the topic had been fully covered.
The participants’ work was no less interesting than the arrangements of the instructors: straws, green lunch mats, netting, colourful tissues and cloths, etc. were used and they set off the fresh flowers they were with.
Over all, we all enjoyed the workshop and it was very successful.
In addition, Vendrice helped with the audio technical side. We could hear the instructors’ words very clearly. The use of a microphone was also successful.
