Dr Mary Stewart led the workshop on Saturday 4th November 2017.
The theme of the workshop was ‘Arrangement with only Green Plant Materials’.

It was a pleasure to have Dr Mary Stewart, RIJI, lead our workshop on 4th November. After being introduced to the participants by our Director Shoko, Mary demonstrated six arrangements on the theme ‘arrangements with only green plant material’ in interesting containers.
The first one was in a tall vase (nageire) and Mary used Rhamnus alaternus ‘Argenteovariegata'(Italian buckthorn) branches and Spiraea japonica.
The second composition was made in a quirky vase and Mary used driftwood and branches she gathered after a storm, and Hydrangea.
The third arrangement in a moon vase consisted of Bamboo, Nandina domestica and Alstroemeria.
For the fourth arrangement Mary used a jug, with Cornus alba (dogwood), green beans hanging on their stalks and Pyracantha berries.
A large 19th century bowl was used for an arrangement without kenzan, Cotoneaster horizontalis being weaved as support on top of the bowl, with Phlomis (Jerusalem Sage) and Senecio greyi branches.
The sixth and last arrangement was made in a Peter Layton glass vase and Mary utilized Beech branches and Gypsophila.
When Mary finished, it was the participants turn to show their creativity and dexterity for a rather difficult theme, restricting us to green material. However, everyone did particularly well, and Mary’s comments were positive and encouraging. Many photographs were taken by all, and the workshop was followed as usual by tea and cakes, in a friendly atmosphere.
